Sustainability. Textiles. Design. Research. Entrepreneurship. Writing. Teaching.
Yolanda Leask is a British textile designer-researcher trained and based in Berlin, Germany. Her work focuses on sustainability and the circular economy and how to make better use of undervalued fibres and waste materials. Despite her art school education, Yolanda thinks a lot like an economist and an engineer, and tries to merge creative and analytical approaches from multiple disciplines to arrive at design solutions that reflect her values: accessibility, practicality, social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Yolanda has a BA and MA in Textile and Surface Design from Weissensee Academy of Art Berlin. She co-founded the company Doppelhaus Ltd and developed the material innovation Cloudwool®, a low-impact biodegradable nonwoven textile. On the side, Yolanda teaches writing to design degree students and design basics to teenagers at TUMO Berlin, and she coaches creative entrepreneurs, artists and musicians on their business and product development strategy and PR.
Yolanda believes her mission in life is to promote creativity, hand in hand with sustainability, in others and herself. If we learn to make, cook, grow, shape our own ideas, possessions, and environment, all within planetary boundaries, we gain skills, confidence and fulfilment, and hopefully improve the world for the better in the process.
